XXXIII. CHRIST OUR EXAMPLE.

YE should follow His steps, who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth.-1 PET. ii. 21, 22.

Psalm lxxxv. 13.

Matt. x. 38-xi. 29—xix. 21-xx. 26-28-Luke ii. 51-xxiii. 34—John viii. 12—xiii. 15, 34-xiv. 31–xv. 10—xvii. 16-Acts iv. 13—Rom. viii. 29—xiii. 14— xv. 2-5—1 Cor. ii. 16—xi. 1— -2 Cor. iii. 18—viii. 7, 9—x. 1—Gal. v. 24-Eph. iv. 24-v. 1, 2—Phil. ii. 5, 15-Col. iii. 13-1 Thes. i. 5-7—Heb. iii. 1— vii. 26—viii. 5—xii. 1—3—1 Pet. i. 15, 16—ii. 21-23-iii. 17, 18 -iv. 1, 2-2 Pet. iii. 18-1 John ii. 6—iii. 3, 16-Rev. iii. 21.

As every day Thy mercy spares
Will bring its trials and its cares,
O Saviour! till my life shall end,
Be Thou my counsellor and friend;
Teach me Thy precepts all divine,
And be Thy great example mine.

ANON.

Give me the wings of faith to rise
Within the veil, and see

The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be.

It was by grace their vict'ries came :
They with united breath,
Ascribe their conquests to the Lamb,
Their triumphs to His death.

They mark'd the way our Saviour trod,
(His Spirit fill'd their breast,)
And following their incarnate God,
They reach'd the promis'd rest.

Our glorious Leader we will praise,
For His own pattern given;
And with the cloud of witnesses,
We'll tread the path to heaven.

Go to dark Gethsemane,

Ye that feel the tempter's power, Your Redeemer's conflict see,

Watch with Him one bitter hour; Turn not from His griefs away ; Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

Follow to the judgement-hall,
View the Lord of Life arraigned;

O the wormword and the gall!
O the pangs His soul sustained !
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss,
Learn of Him to bear the cross.

Calvary's mournful mountain climb
There, adoring at His feet,
Mark that miracle of time,

God's own sacrifice complete :
"It is finished!"-hear the cry;
Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

Early hasten to the tomb,

;

Where they laid His breathless clay;

All is solitude and gloom,

Who hath taken Him away?

Christ is risen! He meets our eyes!

Saviour, teach us so to rise.

MONTGOMERY.

I would, though frail and weak,

His blessed likeness bear, His footsteps trace,
So patient, lowly, so divinely meek.

The thorny path is but a little space,

Soon I shall find in Christ a happy resting-place.
Then welcome cross of suffering or of shame!
The thorns o'er which my wounded feet have trod,
The painful load that wastes this fragile frame,
I feel not 'mid the conscious smile of God.
Faith points me upward to yon bright abode,
The mercy-seat where Christ has now sat down ;
The spirit, crushed beneath this mortal clod,

Yet dares immortal joys and heaven's renown:

Who bears the cross with Christ, shall also wear the crown.

Though sunless, moonless, starless seem

Each sufferer's lonely state,

There is a light whose cheering beam

Its gloom can dissipate,

It comes with healing on its wings,

And heavenly radiance round it flings.

The heart by Christ sustain'd, though deep

Its anguish, still can bear;

The soul He condescends to keep

Shall never know despair;

In nature's weakness, sorrow's night,
God is its strength, its joy, its light.
