My soul hath gone too far astray ;
My feet too often slip;
Restore thy wand'ring sheep.
'Tis a delig ul road;
Offend against my God.
235. Hope in the Covenant. How oft has sin and Satan strove
To rend my soul from thee, my God? But everlasting is thy love,
And Jesus seals it with his blood. The oath and promise of the Lord,
Join to confirm the wond'rous grace ; Eternal pow'r performs the word,
And fills all heav'n with endless praise. Amidst temptations sharp and long,
My soul to this dear refuge flies; Hope is my anchor firm and strong,
While tempests blow, and billows rise. The gospel bears my spirits up;
A faithful and unchanging God Lays the foundation for my hope,
In-oaths, and promises, and blood. 236. Salvation by Grace in Christ. Now to the pow'r of God supreme Be everlasting honours giv'n,
He saves from hell, (we bless his name)
237. Invitation. 8.7.
There a purple stream doth flow; There you'll find an open fountain,
That will wash you white as snow. Never ponder o'er your meanness,
But to Caly’ry all repair;
And the worst is welcome there.
Plunge by faith beneath this flood; Then you'll surely be released,
From the painful pond'rous load. Richly flow'd the crimson river,
Down Immanuel's lovely side, And that blood will you deliver.
Whensoever 'tis apply'd. Christ is ready to receive you,
See his bloody cross appear! From
your sins he will relieve you, And dissolve your ev'ry fear. O behold the Lord expiring,
See the suff’ring Lamb of God! And that love be much admiring, Which
appears in streams of blood,
238. Salvation completed by Christ. C. M.
One of exalted fame,
And finishes the same.
Oppos'd the glorious Son,
'Till the great All was done. Justice was fully satisíy'd;
Atonement,fully made ; The law was fully magnify’d,
And wondrous love display'd.
Salvation, thro' the finish'd work,
attentive ear; While I believe the record true,
I lose each guilty fear, 'Tis finish'd—What a sweet report!
What pleasure it affords ! O what a cordial to my heart,
Are Jesu's dying words ! 'Tis finish'd–he again repeats,
And at the blissful sound, Ten thousand evils die away,
And heav'nly joys abound. 239. Christ the Foundation of his Church.
BEHOLD the sure Foundation-stone
Which God in Zion lays
And his eternal praise.
And saints adore the name;
Nor shall they suffer shame.
Reject it with disdain ;
And envy rage in vain.
Yet must this building rise:
And wond'rous in our eyes.
240. Salvation by Grace. S. M.
Harmonious to the ear :
And all the earth shall hear,
To save rebellious man ;
Which drew the wondrous plan.
In thy eternal book ; 'Twas grace that gave me to the Lamb,
Who all my sorrows took.
To tread the heav'nly road ;
While pressing on to God.
And made my eyes o'erflow; 'Twas grace which kept me to this day,
And will not let me go.
Through everlasting days ;
And well deserves the praise.
My soul with strength divine !
And all my days be thine.
