A valuable and interesting work, treating on almost every topic. Fetched, Duke of York's sale, 298; Dawson Turner's £2. 15s; Hollis, £3.; Drury, £1. 68.

Accedit LUDOLPHI DE SUCHEN LIBELLUS DE ITINERE IN TERRAM SANCTAM, 2 vols. in 1, sm. 4to. fine copy, with some very interesting geographical notes in the handwriting of the XVIth century on the margins (and drawing of a map on folio 43), red morocco extra, gilt edges, EXTREMELY RARE, £12. 12s sine ulla nota

Both these works are printed in the same type. Mandeville's Travels occupy 62 leaves (the first blank) with signatures A to H in eights, except G in six. Ludolphus de Suchen fills up, as Brunet mentions, 54 leaves only, and not 62 as erroneously stated in the Grenville Catalogue, an error probably caused by its being stated that the signatures run from a a to h h vi in eights, not having noticed that the printer had omitted signature gg altogether, chapter CVIII ending on ff viii, and

chapter CIX commencing on h hi. The first capital in each of the works is illuminated in gold and colours. From the word Venetica in the imprint to Mandeville, Brunet considers both works to have emanated from a Venice press, but Panzer thinks them printed at Alost by Theodoric Martin, and Mr. Granville believes from the appearance of the type that they were the production of Gerard de Leew at Antwerp, circa 1484-85. The MS. notes are highly interesting, but especially that on the reverse of folio 55, where the writer seems to be of opinion that SIR JOHN MANDEVILLE HAD COGNISANCE OF AMERICA. It commences "Vult loqui de America." 3760 MARCO POLO'S Travels in the XIIIth Century, being a description by that early traveller of remarkable places and things in the Eastern parts of the World, translated from the Italian, with Notes by W. Leyden, Pieter Van der Aa, 1706-7

I do not find the above curious collection of Travels in Brunet. Boucher de la Richarderie in his Bibliothèque quotes it, "Versammeling den gedenkwaardigsten Reysen, door D. DE Bry unter het name Gottfried, Leyde, 1707-10, 30 vols. in 8;" F. Muller in Amsterdam, in his Bibliographie Neerlande-Russe: "Verzameling der gedenkwaardigsten zee-en land-reizen, 1706, 26 tom. en 27 vols. 8vo."-both copies disagree with the present, which is quite perfect, according to the General Table of Contents, bound up with volume XXVIII.
