Heber's copy fetched £11. 158; Lord Rothesay's £9.; copies have sold as high as 30 guineas This is the work which Bruce the traveller is accused of having pillaged and then destroyed, supposing his own copy unique. The suspicion arose from the circumstance that some of his discoveries are anticipated in this volume.

A collection of Voyages to the East Indies, Japan, Moluccas, many Islands in the Eastern Seas, the Cape, etc. in Dutch, 5 vols. folio, with a profusion of engravings of Natural History, Views, Portraits, etc. beautiful impressions, calf neat, £4. Dordrecht en Amst. 1724-26 The author was above twenty years in India, and has given a very complete history, both natural and civil, of that country. Copies are extremely scarce in this country, and noticed by the editor of the Repertorium Bibliographicum as among the remarkable books in the possession of the Rt. Hon. T. Grenville and Roger Wilbraham, Esq. Hope's copy fetched £13. 28, and Pinkerton's, £15. 158.

3885 VARENI Geographia generalis, editio altera, 18mo. vellum, 3s Amst. The third edition, Cambridge, 1681, was edited by Newton, but it contains unfortunately no additions from that great man. A curious and very interesting Summary of the state of Geographical, Physical and Nautical Sciences at that time. "A most important work, a real' physical geography.' Varenius was the first to distinguish between general and special Geography.”—Humboldt's Cosmos. 3887 VARTHEMA (Ludovico de, Bolognese) Itinerario ne lo Egypto, ne la Suria, ne la Arabia Deserta & Felice, ne la Persia, ne la India: & ne la Ethiopia, sm. 4to. woodcut titlepage, very fine copy, calf extra, gilt edges, by Simier, VERY RARE, £5. Milano, J. A. Scinzenzeler, 1523 The full colophon is printed as follows:

CE Sta

M.CCCmpata in Milano per Johanne Angelo Scinzenzeler nel anno del Signor

CCXXIII, Adi, XXX de Aprile.

As will easily be perceived the two last lines had dropped a little so as to make three, the date being thus divided into two lines. Brunet says he saw a copy with the date 1522, corresponding exactly to the above; Thorpe used always to state that the edition of 1523 was unknown to Brunet;they are evidently the same. 3888 LUDOVICI PATRITII ROMANI, Novum Itinerarivm Ethiopiæ, Ægipti, utriusque Arabia, Persidis, Siriæ ac Indiæ intra et extra Gangem, interprete Archangelo Madrignano, sm. folio, First Latin edition, FINE COPY, red morocco, gilt leaves, RARE, £7. 78 Milano, auspitiis Bernardini Carvajal, (1511) Hibbert purchased this copy June 22, 1818, at Sotheby's, for £18. 18s. 3889 VARTHEMA. Die Ritterlich und lobwürdig Reisz des gestrengen und über all ander weyt erfarnen Ritters und Landtfarers Herren Ludowico Vartomans von Bolonia sagend von den Landen Egypto, Syria, von beiden Arabia, Persia, India und Ethiopia, &c. sm. 4to. with 49 curious woodcuts, Black letter, fine copy, VERY SCARCE, £3. 15s Straszburg, durch Johannem Knobloch, 1516 Panzer and Brunet mention an edition printed at Augsburg in 1515, and Panzer another by Knobloch at Strasburg in 1515, but not this of 1516. The popularity of the work must have therefore been great to have called forth three different editions within a few months. The Author's Adventures, however, seem to have been extraordinary, and his Tales respecting his Amours, the

Wedding Customs, and similar subjects, are told with much humour, although sometimes bordering on indecency. See especially Book II, Chapt. VII; Book III, Chapt. XIX, XXV, LI, LXXIV; Book IV, Chapt. III, &c. &c.
