25 That he prevailed not against him.] Haste thee (said the angel to Lot), escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come "thither" ("to Zoar"). Ge. xix. 22. And Moses said unto the Lord, Then the Egyptians shall hear it (that God would smite the Israelites and disinherit them); (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;) and they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou, Lord, art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them; and that thou goest before them by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night. Nu. xiv. 13, 14. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and "ye men of Israel" ("the men of thy war"); I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Is. xli. 14. Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons; and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. Is. xlv. 11. He (Jacob) took his brother by the heel in the womb; and by his strength he had power with God; yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept and made supplication unto him; he found him in Beth-el, and there he spake with us. Ho. xii. 3, 4. But he (Jesus) answered her (the woman of Canaan whose daughter was grievously vexed with a devil) not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs; and she said, Truth Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith. Be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Mat. xv. 23-28. Which of you (said Jesus) shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Lu. xi. 5. 7, 8, 9.

Touched the hollow, &c.] Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because "he" ("the angel") touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank. Ge. xxxii. 32. And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong. Thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled. Ps. xxx. 6, 7. Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. And "he" "Jesus") left" them" ("his disciples"), and went away again, and prayed the third time. (0 my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done !) Mat. xxvi. 41. 44. And lest I (said Paul) should be exalted above measure, through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee; for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly, therefore, will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Co. xii. 7-9.

26 Let me go.] Now, therefore, let me alone (saith the Lord), that my wrath may wax hot against "them" ("the worshippers of the molten calf"), and that I may consume them. Ex. xxxii. 10. Let me alone that I may destroy "them” (“the rebellious Israelites"), and blot out their name from under heaven, and I will make of "thee" (" Moses") a nation mightier and greater than they. De. ix. 14. Thine head upon thee (the church of Christ) is like Carmel; and the hair of thine head like purple. The king is held in the galleries. Ca. vii. 5. Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come, concerning my sons; and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. Is. xlv. 11. There is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee; for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us because of our iniquities. Is. lxiv. 7. And they drew nigh unto the village whither they went, and he made as though he would have gone further; but they constrained him, saying, Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent ; and he went in to tarry with them. Lu. xxiv. 28, 29.

I will not let thee go.] It was but a little that I (the church) passed from them (the watchmen of the city), but I found him (Christ)

whom my soul loveth; I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her who conceived me. Ca. iii. 4. Yea, he (Jacob) had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept and made supplication unto him; he found him in Beth-el, and there he spake unto us. Hos. xii. 4. Men ought always to pray, and not to faint. Shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? Lu. xviii. 1. 7. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us. Ro. viii. 37. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, immoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Co. xv. 58. For "this thing” (“ Paul's thorn in the flesh”) I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me; but he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee. 2 Co. xii. 8, 9. So Christ glorified not himself, &c. who, in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications, with strong crying and tears, unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered. He. v. 7, 8.

Thou bless me.] And Jabez (who was more honourable than his brethren) called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested. 1 Ch. iv. 10. God be merciful unto us, and bless us. God, even our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear him. Ps. lxvii. 1. 6, 7. The Lord hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron; He will bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great. Ps. cxv. 12, 13. 27 See verse 29. 28 Thy name, &c.] Neither shall thy name be called any more Abram; but thy name shall be Abraham. And as for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. Ge. xvii. 5. 15 And he (Jacob) erected there (at Shalem, a city of Shechem,) an altar, and called it Elelohe-Israel. Ge. xxxiii. 20. And God said unto him (Jacob) (when he came out of Padanaram), Thy name is Jacob; thy name shall not be called any more Jacob; but Israel shall be thy name. Ge. xxxv. 10. Moses called Oshea, the son of Nun, Jehoshua. Nu. xiii. 16.

And he (David) sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his (Solomon's) name Jedidiah, because of the Lord. 2 Sa. xii. 25. Unto this day "they" ("the Israel. ites") do after the former manners: they fear not the Lord, neither do they after their sta tutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the Lord commanded the children of Jacob," whom he named "Israel." 2 Ki. xvii. 34. And the Gentiles shall see "thy" ("Zion's") righteousness, and all kings thy glory; and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. Thou shalt no more be termed "Forsaken," neither shall thy land any more be termed " Desolate," but thou shalt be called "Hephzi-bah," and thy land "Beulah;" for the Lord delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. Is. Ixii. 2. 4. And "ye" ("the wicked of Israel") shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen, for the Lord God shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name. Is. lxv. 15. And "he" (" Andrew") brought "him" (“ Simon") to Jesus; and when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona; thou shalt be called Cephas, which is, by in terpretation, A stone.

John i. 42. He that

hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches: To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it. Re. ii. 17.

Power with God.] See verse 24. Even the Lord God of hosts; the Lord is his memorial. Hos. xii. 3, 4, 5.

With men.] And Jacob said (to Esau), Sell me, this day, thy birthright. Ge. xxv. 31. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before "thou" ("Esau") camest, and have blessed him? And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. Ge. xxvii. 33. 36. And God came to Laban, the Syrian, in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban; and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what

die. Ju. vi. 22, 23. Then Manoah knew that he was an angel of the Lord (that had appeared to him). And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. Ju. xiii. 21, 22. Then said I (Isaiah), Woe is me, for I am undone for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of Hosts. Is. vi. 5. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son which is in the bosom of the Father: he hath declared him. John i. 18. But we all with open face beholding, as in a glass, the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Co. iii. 18. God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 2 Co. iv. 6. I cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, in the knowledge of him. Ep. i. 17. (The Father) hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son, who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature. Col. i. 15. But (his grace) is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death; and hath brought life and immortality to light, through the gospel. 2 Ti. i. 10. By faith "he" ("Moses") forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. He. xi. 27.

31 The sun rose upon him.] And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot. Ge. xix. 15. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. Ge. xix. 23. But unto you that fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings. Mal. iv. 2.

He halted, &c.] See verse 25. For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. Ps. xxxviii. 17. Lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given me a

32 Eat not of the sinew, &c.] Therefore (because Dagon's head and hands were est off upon the threshold) neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day. 1 Sa. v. 5.

CHAP. XXXIII.-1 Esau came.] And Esau hated Jacob, because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him. And Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. Ge. xxvii. 41, 42. And the messengers returned to Jacob (whom he had sent befort him to Esau) saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. Ge. xxxii. 6.

And he divided the children.] Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed (at the report of his messengers), and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands: and said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite, then the other company which is left shall escape. Ge. xxxii. 7, 8. And he delivered them (the cattle) into the hands of his servants, every drove by themselves: and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove. Ge. xxxii. 16.

2 Rachel and Joseph, &c.] And he (Jacob) loved also Rachel more than Leah, &c. Ge. xxix. 30. And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb, and she conceived and bare a son, and she called his name Joseph. Ge. xxx. 22, 23, 24

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours. Ge. xxxvii. 3. And they (who fear God) shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Mal. iii. 17.

3 Passed over before them.] And when "he" ("the good shepherd") putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep; but he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father, and I lay down my life for the sheep. John x. 4. 11, 12. 15.

Bowed himself, &c.] See chap. xviii. 2. and com. And Joseph was the governor over the land (of Egypt); and Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him, with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 6. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. Pr. vi. 3. If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place, for yielding pacifieth great offences. Ec. x. 4. Whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Lu. xiv. 11.

Seven times.] The barren hath born seven, and she that hath many children is waxed feeble. 1 Sa. ii. 5.

4 Embraced him.] As a prince hast thou (Jacob) power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Ge. xxxii. 28. And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there. And he (Joseph) took and sent messes unto "them" ("his brethren") from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of their's. Ge. xliii. 30. 34. And he (Joseph) wept aloud: moreover, he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them. Ge. xlv. 2. 15. Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to beautify the house of the Lord, which is in Jerusalem: and hath extended mercy unto me before the king, and his counsellors, and before all the king's

mighty princes: and I was strengthened as the hand of the Lord my God was upon me. Ezr. vii. 27, 28. O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of " this man" (" Artaxerxes"). Ne. i. 11. I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Ps. xxxiv. 4. When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. Pr. xvi. 7. The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. Pr. xxi. 1.

Fell on his neck.] And he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck, and wept and Benjamin wept upon his neck. Moreover, he kissed all his brethren, and wept upon them: and after that his brethren talked with him. Ge. xlv. 14. 15. And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him: and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. Ge. xlvi. 29. And he (the prodigal son) arose, and came to his father: but when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. Lu. xv. 20. And "they" all ("the elders of Ephesus") wept sore, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him. Ac. xx. 37.

5 The children which God, &c.] And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? Ge. xxx. 2. Then Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. Ge. xlviii. 9. So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. Ru. iv. 13. For this child (Samuel) I prayed, and the Lord hath given me my petition, which I asked of him. 1 Sa. i. 27. And of all my sons (for the Lord hath given me many sons), he hath chosen Solomon my son (said David), to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. 1 Ch. xxviii. 5. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Ps. cxxvii. 3. Behold, I and the children whom the Lord hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion. Is. viii. 18.
