Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcil'd.,

2 Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumphs of the skies!
With th' angelic host proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

3 Christ, by highest heav'n ador'd,
Christ the everlasting Lord:
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb.

4 Lo he lays his glories by;
Born, that man no more may die ;
Born, to raise the sons of earth,
Born, to give them second birth.

5 Come desire of nations, come,
Fix in us thy humble home;
Rise, the woman's conquʼring seed,
Bruise in us the serpent's head.

C. M. Christ's Advent Doddridge.

1 HARK! the glad sound, Messiah comes The Saviour promis'd long ;

Let ev'ry heart prepare a throne,
And ev'ry voice a song.

2 He comes the prison'rs to release,
In satan's bondage held;

The gates of brass before him burst,
The iron fetters yield.

3 He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the treasures of his grace,
T'enrich the humble poor.

4 Our glad Hosanna's Prince of peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;

And heav'ns eternal arch shall ring
With thy beloved name.

8. 7. 4. Celebrating Christ's Nativity.

MONTGOMERY.

ANGELS! from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth;
Come and worship,

Worship Christ the new born king.
2 Shepherds! in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant light;

Come and worship, &c.

3 Saints! before the altar bending,
Waiting long with hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord descending,
In his temple shall appear;

Come and worship, &c.

4 Sinners! bow'd with true repentance, Doom'd by guilt to endless pains; Justice now repeals your sentence, Mercy calls you-breaks your chains Come and worship, &c.

148th. Praise for the Saviour's birth

KELLY.

! G

IVE praise to God on high,

2

With angels round his throne;

Give praise to God with joy;

Give praise to God alone;

'Tis meet his saints their songs should raise, And give the Saviour endless praise.

The long expected morn

Has dawn'd upon the earth;
The Saviour Christ is born,

And angels sing his birth:

We'll join the bright seraphic throng; We'll share their joys, and swell their song

O'tis a lofty theme
Supplied by angels' tongues!
All other subjects seem

Unworthy of our songs,

This sacred theme has boundless charms,
It fills, it captivates, it warms.

Now sing of peace divine,
Of grace to guilty man;
No wisdom, Lord, but thine,
Could form the wondrous plan:

Where peace and righteousness embrace,
And justice goes along with grace.

AWAKE, O Zion's daughters! rise;
Shake off thy dust; no more repine;

Let gladness sparkle in thine eyes,
In all thy fairest garments shine.

LIFE AND MINISTRY OF CHRIST.

2 Behold thy king, expected long,
In humble pomp at length appears;
Amidst yon praising infant throng,
His meek majestic head he rears.
3 No fiery steed he rides; he sways
No tinsel rod of earthly reign:
A colt, ne'er used till now, conveys
To thee thy lowly, Prince divine.

4 Here's no vain crowd, no gaudy show,
Babes taught of heav'n, resound his praise
His path the Gallileans strew
With branches of triumphant peace.

5 Hosanna! thronging myriads shout,
Jehovah brings salvation nigh:
Hosanna! ev'ry child cries out-
Jehovah send prosperity.

L. M. See how he loved.

ANON.

1 SEE how he lov'd? exclaim'd the Jews
When Jesus o'er his Lazarus wept;
My grateful heart the words shall use,
While on his life my eye is kept.

2 See how he lov'd, who, firm yet mild,
Patient endur'd the scoffing tongue;
Tho' oft provok'd, he ne'er revil'd,
Or did his greatest foe a wrong.
