Perseverance.

S. M.

[ocr errors]

Y soul, be on thy guard;

Ten thousand foes arise;
The hosts of sin are pressing hard
To draw thee from the skies.
2 O watch, and fight, and pray;
The battle ne'er give o'er;
Renew it boldly every day,
And help divine implore.
3 Ne'er think the vict'ry won,
Nor lay thine armour down:
The work of faith will not be done,
Till thou obtain the crown.

4 Then persevere till death

Shall bring thee to thy God;

He'll take thee, at thy parting breath, To his divine abode.

S. M.

The mind that was in Christ.

QUIP me for the war,

EQUIP

And teach my hands to fight; My simple, upright heart prepare, And guide my words aright. 2 Control my every thought; My whole of sin remove: Let all my works in thee be wrought; Let all be wrought in love.

3 0 arm me with the mind,

Meek Lamb, that was in thee;
And let my knowing zeal be join'd
With perfect charity.

4 With calm and temper'd zeal
Let me enforce thy call;
And vindicate thy gracious will,
Which offers life to all.

5 O may I love like thee,-
In all thy footsteps tread;
Thou hatest all iniquity,

But nothing thou hast made.
6 O may I learn the art,
With meekness to reprove;
To hate the sin with all my heart,
But still the sinner love.

1st P. M. 6 lines 8s.

The victory that overcometh the world.
URROUNDED by a host of foes,

SURROUNDED by a

Nor swift to flee, nor strong to' oppose,
Single against hell, earth, and sin :
Single, yet undismay'd, I am;
I dare believe in Jesus' name.

2 What though a thousand hosts engage
A thousand worlds, my soul to shake;
I have a shield shall quell their rage,

And drive the alien armies back : Portray'd, it bears a bleeding Lamb; I dare believe in Jesus' name.

Faith sees the final triumph.

M I a soldier of the cross,

A follwer of the Lamb,

And shall I fear to own his cause,
Or blush to speak his name?

2 Must I be carried to the skies
On flowery beds of ease;

C. M.

While others fought to win the prize,
And sail'd through bloody seas ?
3 Are there no foes for me to face?
Must I not stem the flood?

Is this vile world a friend to grace,
To help me on to God?

4. Since I must fight if I would reign,
Increase my courage, Lord;
I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,
Supported by thy word.

5 Thy saints in all this glorious war
Shall conquer, though they die:
They see the triumph from afar,-
By faith they bring it nigh.

6 When that illustrious day shall rise, And all thy armies shine

In robes of vict'ry through the skies,
The glory shall be thine.

The violent take it by force.
MAY thy powerful word
Inspire a feeble worm

To rush into thy kingdom, Lord,
And take it as by storm.
2 O may we all improve

The grace already given,

S. M.

To seize the crown of perfect love,
And scale the mount of heaven.

Heavenly rest in anticipation. We mansions in the skies, THEN I can read my title clear

I'll bid farewell to every fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.

2 Should earth against my soul engage,
And fiery darts be hurl'd,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
Let storms of sorrow fall,-

So I but safely reach my home,

My God, my heaven, my all.

4 There I shall bathe my weary soul

In seas of heavenly rest,

And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

26th P. M. 76, 76, 76, 76. No cause for fear.

OD is my strong salvation;
What foe have I to fear?
In darkness and temptation,
My light, my help, is near:
Though hosts encamp around me,
Firm in the fight I stand;
What terror can confound me,
With God at my right hand?
2 Place on the Lord reliance;
My soul, with courage wait;
His truth be thine affiance,
When faint and desolate;

His might thy heart shall strengthen,
His love thy joy increase;

Mercy thy days shall lengthen ;
The Lord will give thee peace.

Victory.

S. M.

THE good fight have fought,-
O when shall I declare!

The vict'ry by my Saviour got,
I long with Paul to share.
20 may I triumph so,

When all my warfare's past; And, dying, find my latest foe Under my feet at last!

3 This blessed word be mine,
Just as the port is gain'd,-

Kept by the power of grace divine,
I have the faith maintain'd.

4 The' apostles of my Lord,

To whom it first was given,

They could not speak a greater word,
Nor all the saints in heaven.

739

The universal victory of the cross.

JESUS, the Conqu'ror, reigns,

In glorious strength array'd; His kingdom over all maintains, And bids the earth be glad : Ye sons of men, rejoice

In Jesus' mighty love;

S. M.

Lift up your heart, lift up your voice,
To Him who rules above.

2 Extol his kingly power;
Kiss the exalted Son,

Who died, and lives to die no more,
High on his Father's throne:

Our Advocate with God,

He undertakes our cause,

And spreads through all the earth abroad

The vict'ry of his cross.

740

Victory is on the Lord's side.

ARISE, ye saints, arise!

Lord our leader is;

The foe before his banner flies,
And victory is His.

2 We follow thee, our Guide,

Our Saviour, and our King;

S. M.

We follow thee, through grace supplied From heaven's eternal spring.

3 We soon shall see the day

When all our toils shall cease;

When we shall cast our arms away,
And dwell in endless peace.
