PATIENCE AND RESIGNATION.

742

Tribulation to be expected.

Asterions woes oppress'd,
We must through tribulation go
To our eternal rest.

S strangers here below,

S. M.

2 Thus Christ, our glorious Head,
Ascended to his throne:
Why should his servants fear to tread
The way their Lord has gone!
3 The path to glory lies

Through conflict and distress :-
But joyful we at length shall rise,
The kingdom to possess.

1st P. M. 6 lines 8s.

Christ our pattern and example.
AVIOUR of all, what hast thou done!
What hast thou suffer'd on the tree!
Why didst thou groan thy mortal groan,
Obedient unto death for me!

The myst'ry of thy passion show,-
The end of all thy griefs below.

2 Pardon, and grace, and heaven to buy,
My bleeding sacrifice expired;
But didst thou not my pattern die,
That, by thy glorious Spirit fired,
Faithful to death I might endure,
And make the crown by suff'ring sure!
8 Thou didst the meek example leave,
That I might in thy footsteps trend;
Might like the Man of Sorrows grieve,
And groan, and bow with thee my Head:
Thy dying in my body bear,

And all thy state of suff'ring share.

13th P. M. 10 10, 11 11.

The Lord will provide.

THOUGH troubles assail, and dangers affright, Though friends should all fail, and foes all unite,

Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide, The promise assures us,-The Lord will provide. 2.The birds, without barn or storehouse, are fed; From them let us learn to trust for our bread: His saints what is fitting shall ne'er be denied, So long as 'tis written,-The Lord will provide. 3 When Satan appears to top up our path, And fills us with fears, we triumph by faith; He cannot take from us (though oft he has tried) The heart-cheering promise,-The Lord will provide.

4 He tells us we 're weak,-our hope is in vain; The good that we seek we ne'er shall obtain: But when such suggestions our graces have tried, This answers all questions,-The Lord will pro vide.

5 No strength of our own, nor goodness we claim
Our trust is all thrown on Jesus's Name;
In this our strong tower for safety we hide;
The Lord is our power,-The Lord will provide.
6 When life sinks apace, and death is in view,
The word of his grace shall comfort us through:
Not fearing or doubting, with Christ on our side,
We hope to die shouting,-The Lord will provide

Light shining out of darkness.
COD moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;

He plants his footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

2 Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up his bright designs,
And works his sov'reign will.

3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take: The clouds ye so much dread

Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head,

4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

5 His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour:

The bud niny have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

6 Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan his work in vain:
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

A blessing for those who mourn.

Done lives a peaceful tenor keep;
For God, who pities man, has shown
A blessing for the eyes that weep.
2 The light of smiles shall fill again.
The lids that overflow with tears;
And weary hours of wo nnd pain,
Are promises of happier years.

EEM not that they are blest alone

3 There is a day of sunny rest,
For every dark and troubled night;
Though grief may bide an evening guest
Yet joy shall come with early ligh

4 Nor let the good man's trust depart,
Though life its common gifts deny,-
Though with a pierced and broken heart,
And spurn'd of men, he goes to die.

5 For God has mark'd each sorrowing day,
And number'd every secret tear;
And heaven's eternal bliss shall pay
For all his children suffer here.

At evening time it shall be light."
TE journey through a vale of tears,

Wurney a of

And worldly cares, and worldly fears,
Go with us to the last.

2 Not to the last! Thy word hath said,
Could we but read aright,-
Poor pilgrim, lift in hope thy head;
At eve it shall be light!

3 Though earth-born shadows how may shroud Thy thorny path awhile,

God's blessed word can part each cloud,
And bid the sunshine smile.

4 Only believe, in living faith,
His love and power divine,
And ere thy sun shall set in death,
His light shall round thee shine.

5 When tempest clouds are dark on high,
His bow of love and peace
Shines sweetly in the vaulted sky,-
A pledge that storms shall cease.

6 Hold on thy way, with hope unchill'd,
By faith and not by sight,

And thou shalt own his word fulfill'd,-
At eve it shall be light.

The only solace in sorrow.
THOU who driest the mourner's tear,
How dark this world would be,
If, when deceived and wounded here,
We could not fly to thee.

2 The friends who in our sunshine live,
When winter comes, are flown;
And he who has but tears to give,
Must weep those tears alone.

3 But Christ can heal that broken heart,
Which, like the plants that throw
Their fragrance from the wounded part,
Breathes sweetness out of wo.

40 who could bear life's stormy doom,
Did not His wing of love

Come brightly wafting through the gloom,
Our peace-branch from above.

5 Then sorrow, touch'd by Him, grows bright With more than rapture's ray;

As darkness shows us worlds of light,

We never saw by day.

Crosses are blessings.

C. M.

SINCE all the varying scenes of time

God's watchful eye surveys,
O, who so wise to choose our lot,
Or to appoint our ways!

2 Good, when he gives-supremely good,
Nor less when he denies;

E'en crosses, from his sov'reign hand,
Are blessings in disguise.

3 Why should we doubt a Father's love,
So constant and so kind

To his unerring, gracious will

Be every wish resign'd.
