137.

Divine Goodness in Afliction. DODDRIDGE. | 2 He bids us make his glories known, --I GREAT Ruler of all nature's frame,

His works of power and grace;
We own thy power divine;

And we'll convey his wonders down We hear thy breath in every storm,

Through every rising race.
For all the winds are thine.

3 Our lips shall tell them to our sons, 2 Wide as they sweep their sounding way, And they again to theirs ; They work thy sovereign will;

That generations yet unborn
And, awed by thy majestic voice,

May teach them to their heirs.
Confusion shall be still.

4 Thus shall they learn in God alone * Thy mercy tempers every blast

Their hope securely stands,
To those who seek thy face;

That they may ne'er forget his works, And mingles, with the tempest's roar,

But practise his commands. The whispers of thy grace. 4 Those gentle whispers let me hear,

His Greatness is Unsearchable."

139. Till all the tumult cease, And gales of Paradise shall lull

1 Great God, on whose sustaining power My weary soul to peace.

Unnumbered worlds depend;
Great Spirit, comprebending all,

Whom none can comprehend, 138.

Pious Education of Children. 1's. 78. I LET children hear the mighty deeds 2 With wondering reverence we adore, Which God performed of old;

With awe before thee bend, Which, in our younger years, we saw, Whom none, but by tbine inward light And which our fatlicrs told.

And spirit, apprehend.

The Seasons.

BARBAULD

142,

Glory to God in the Highest. MONTGOMERY. 1 Songs of praise the angels sang,

Heaven with hallelujahs rang,
When Jehovah's work begun, —
When he spake, and it was done.

2 Songs of praise awoke the morn

When the Prince of Peace was born; Songs of praise arose when he Captive led captivity.

3 Heaven and earth must pass away ;

Songs of praise shall crown that day: God will make new heavens and earth; Songs of praise shall hail their birth.

143.
1 Praise to God, immortal praise,

For the love that crowns our days.
Bounteous Source of every joy,

Let thy praise our tongues employ 2 All that Spring, with bounteous hand,

Scatters o'er the smiling land;
All that liberal Autumn pours

From her rich, o'erflowing stores, 3 These to thee, our God, we owe,

Source whence all our blessings flow;
And for these our souls shall raise

Grateful vows and solemn praise. 4 Yes, to thee my soul shall raise

Grateful, never-ending praise;
And, when every blessing's flown.

Love thee for thyself alone 144.

Doxology.
LET us, with a gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, — for he is kind;
For his mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

4 Saints below, with heart and voice,

Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here, by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.

6 Borne upon the latest breath,

Songs of praise shall conquer death;
Then, amidst eternal joy,
Songs of praise our powers employ.

145.

Spread wide his Maker's name around, 1 BEGIN, my soul, the exalted lay ;

Till heaven shall echo back the sound, Let each enraptured thought obey,

In songs of holy joy.
And praise the Almighty's name:
Lo! heaven and earth, and seas and skies, 146.

Delight in God's Glory.
In one melodious concert rise,
To swell the inspiring theme.

1 Parent of good, thy works of might

I trace with wonder and delight: 2 Ye deeps, with roaring billows rise,

Thy name is all divine. To join the thunders of the skies, There's nought in earth or sea or air, Praise Him who bids you roll:

Or heaven itself, that's good or fair, His praise in softer notes declare,

But is entirely thine.
Each whispering breeze of yielding air,
And breathe it to the soul.

2 To thee my warm affections move

In sweet astonishment and love, 8 Wake, all ye soaring throng, and sing; While at thy feet I fall. Ye feathered warblers of the spring, I pant for nought beneath the skies : Harmonious anthems raise

To thee my ardent wishes rise, To Him who shaped your finer mould, 0

my eternal All! Who tipped your glittering wings with gold,

3 What shall I do to spread thy praise, And tuned your voice to praise.

My Gol, through my remaining days?

Or how thy name adore ?
1 Lot man, by nobler passions swayed, To thee I consecrate my breath :
Let man, in God's own image made, Let me be thine in life and death,
His breath in praise employ ;

And thine for everinore.

II. MOORE.

147.
Praise for God's Love.

And all my thoughts and passions tend | My God, thy boundless love I praise : To thee, my Father and my Friend, How bright on high its glories blaze! My soul's eternal good.

How sweetly bloom below! It streams from thine eternal throne; 148. Providential Goodness of God. EXETER COL. Through heaven its joys for ever run, And o'er the earth they flow.

1 GREAT Source of unexhausted good,

Who giv'st us health and friends and food 2 Tis love that paints the purple morn, And peace and calin content, And bids the clouds, in air upborne, Like fragrant incense, to the skies, Their genial drops distil:

Let songs of grateful praises rise
In every vernal beam it glows,

For all thy blessings lent.
And breathes in every gale that blows,
And glides in every rill.

2 Through all the dangers of the day,

Thy providence attends our way, 3 But in thy word I see it shine

To guard us and to guide; With grace and glories more divine, Thy grace directs our wandering will, Proclaiming sins forgiven;

And warns us, lest seducing ill There Faith, bright cherub, points the Allure our souls aside.

way To realms of everlasting day,

3 To thee our lives, our all, we owe, And opens all her heaven.

Our peace and sweetest joys below,

And brightest hopes above; Then let the love that makes me blessed Then let our lives, and all that's ours With cheerful praise inspire my breast,

Our souls, and all our active powers, And ardent gratitude;

Be sacred to thy love.
