For a life His praise expressing,
For a death His name confessing,
For a heav'n of endless blessing,

Let us pray.

Morning Prayer for a Child.
GOD! I thank Thee that the night
In peace and rest hath pass'd away,
And that I see in this fair light
My Father's smile that makes it day.
2 Be Thou my guide, and let me live
As under Thine all-seeing eye;
Supply my wants, my sins forgive,
And make me happy when I die.

Children's Morning Hymn.

L.M.

1 THE darkness is over, the sun is on high,

118.

The lark is up singing his song in the sky; The cattle and labourers, all are abroad, And ev'ry thing serving and praising its God. 2 I will not lie sleeping my morning away, But try to be busy and useful as they; I'll rise with the skylark and join in his song, And thank God for watching me all the night long.

3 How kind God is to me, how great and how

good, [blood! And for me my Saviour has shed His own

Lord, teach me that Saviour to love and to

know,

And make me more like Him the older I

grow.

4 How early He rose, to get time for His prayer, His parents He honour'd and minded with

care;

And now He's in glory, He's loving to all, And will save whosoever shall on His name

call.

AN

Evening.

ND now another day is gone
I'll sing my Maker's praise,

My comforts every hour make known
His providence and grace.

2 But how my childhood runs to waste!
My sins how great their sum!
Lord, give me pardon for the past,
And strength for days to come.

3 I lay my body down to sleep,
Let angels guard my head;

And through the hours of darkness keep
Their watch around my bed.

4 With cheerful heart I close mine eyes
Since Thou wilt not remove;

And in the morning let me rise
Rejoicing in Thy love.

How

[blocks in formation]

fine has the day been, how bright was the sun,

How lovely and joyful the course that he run; Tho' he rose in a mist when his race he begun, And there followed some droppings of rain; But now the fair traveller's come to the west, His rays are all gold, and his beauties are best, He paints the sky gay as he sinks to his rest, And foretells a bright rising again.

2 Just such is the Christian: his race he begins Like the sun in a mist, while he mourns for his sins, [shines, And melts into tears,-then he breaks out and And travels his heavenly way:

But when he comes nearer to finish his race, Like a fine setting sun he looks richer in grace, And gives a sure hope at the end of his days Of rising in brighter array.

Evening Prayer for a Child.
ANOTHER day its course hath run,

L.M.

And still, O God, Thy child is blest;
For Thou hast been by day my sun,
And Thou wilt be by night my rest.
2 Sweet sleep descends, my eyes to close;
And now, while all the world is still,
I give my body to repose,

My spirit to my Father's will.

1

Evening Prayer.

JESUS, tender Shepherd, hear me,
Bless Thy little lamb to-night;
Through the darkness be Thou near me,
Keep me safe till morning light.

8.7.

2 Through this day Thy hand hath led me,
And I thank Thee for Thy care;
Thou hast warm'd me, clothed and fed me,
Listen to my ev'ning prayer.

3 Let my faults be all forgiven,
Bless the friends I love so well;
Take me, when I die, to heaven,
Happy, there with Thee to dwell.

77.

A Family Prayer.

0 LORD! another day is flown,

And we, a lowly band,

Are met once more before Thy throne,
To bless Thy fostering hand.

2 And wilt Thou lend a listening ear
To praises low as ours?

Thou wilt; for Thou dost love to hear
The song which meekness pours.

C.M.

3 Through Jesus Thou a smile wilt deign
As we before Thee pray;

For He did bless the infant train,
And we are less than they.

4 O let Thy grace perform its part,
And let contention cease;

And shed abroad in every heart
Thine everlasting peace.

5 Thus chasten'd, cleans'd, entirely Thine, A flock by Jesus led;

The sun of holiness shall shine

In glory on our head.

6 And Thou wilt turn our wandering feet, And Thou wilt bless our way;

Till worlds shall fade, and faith shall greet
The dawn of lasting day.

ERE

Child's Evening Prayer.

on my bed my limbs I lay,

God grant me grace my prayers to say: O God! preserve my mother dear In strength and health for many a year; 2 And O preserve my father too, And may I pay him reverence due; And may I my best thoughts employ To be my parents' hope and joy; 3 And O preserve my brothers,--both From evil doings and from sloth; And may we always love each other, Our friends, our father, and our mother: 4 And still, O Lord, to me impart An innocent and grateful heart, That after my last sleep I may Awake to Thy eternal day!

Amen.
