the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between 15 me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow 16 shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto 17 Noah, this is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. And the sons of 18 Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan. These are the three 19 sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread. And 20 Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

15. Remember, &c.] And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the children of Israel; and Aaron shall bear their names before the Lord upon his two shoulders for a memorial (said the Lord to Moses). Exod. xxviii. 12. Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac; and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember, and I will remember the land; I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt. Lev. xxvi. 42.

Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. Deut. vii. 9. And "he" ("Solomon') said, Lord God of Israel, there is no God like thee, in heaven above or on earth beneath, who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants, that walk before thee with all their heart. 1 Kings viii. 23. Now therefore our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee. Nehem. ix. 32. And he remembered for them his covenant. Ps. cvi. 45. Do not abhor us; for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory; remember, break not thy covenant with us. Jer. xiv. 21. Nevertheless, I will remember my covenant with "thee" ("Jerusalem") in the days of thy youth; and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant. Ezek. xvi. 60. As he (the Lord) spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; the oath which he sware to our father Abraham. Luke i. 73.

The waters, &c.] In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment, but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord my Redeemer; for the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. Isa. liv. 8. 10.

16 Everlasting covenant, &c.] See verses 9, 10, 11; Gen. viii. 21, 22. He that is born in thine house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised, and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And God said (unto Abraham), Sarah, thy wife, shall bear thee a son indeed, and thou shalt call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. Gen. xvii. 13. 19. Although my house be not so with God, yet he hath made with me (David) an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and sure; for this is all my salvation and all my desire, although he make it not to grow. 2 Sam. xxiii. 5. I have made a covenant with my chosen (saith God), I have sworn unto David my servant, thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Ps. lxxxix. 3. 4. With everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. Isa. liv. 8. 10. Incline your ear and come unto me, hear and your soul shall live, and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Isa. lv. 3. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away "from them" (or "from after them") to do them good. Jer. xxxii. 40. Now the God of peace that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect, &c. Heb. xiii. 20.

19 of them, &c.] Bring forth with thee every living thing, that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful and multiply upon the earth. Gen. viii. 17. (See Gen. x. 2-32 for the generations of Noah, and 1 Chron. i. 4—28 for Adam's line to Noah, and so to Abraham).

20 An husbandman, &c.] Thorns also and thistles shall it (the ground) bring forth to thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; therefore the Lord

21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was un22 covered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the 23 nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And

God sent "him" ("Adam") forth to till the ground from whence he was taken. Gen. iii. 18, 19. 23. Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain was a tiller of the ground. Gen. iv. 2. And he (Lamech) called his son's name Noah, saying, the same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands. Gen. v. 29. The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life, but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. Prov. x. 11. When it goeth well with the righteous the city rejoiceth, and when the wicked perish there is shouting. Prov. xi. 10. The profit of the earth is for all. Eccles. v. 9. Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground? his God doth instruct him to discretion and doth teach him. Isa. xxviii. 24. 26. Planted a vineyard, &c.] What man is he that hath planted a vineyard and hath not yet eaten of it? Deut. xx. 6. Thou (the disobedient) shalt plant a vineyard and shalt not gather the grapes thereof. Deut. xxviii. 30. I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding, and lo, it was all grown over with thorns. Prov. xxiv. 30. They made me the keeper of the vineyards, but mine own vineyard have I not kept. Cant. i. 6. Who planteth a vineyard and eateth not of the fruit thereof? 1 Cor. ix. 7.

21 Was drunken, &c.] Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. Gen. vi. 9. Come let us make our father drink wine (saith Lot's daughters). Gen. xix. 32. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging. Prov. xx. 1. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright; at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Prov. xxiii. 31, 32. Then entered Satan into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve; and he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. Luke xxii. 3, 4. Let us walk honestly as in the day, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. Rom. xiii. 13. Wherefore, let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 1 Cor. x. 12. The works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; they that do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal. v. 19, 20, 21. Speak thou the things which become sound doctrine, that the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in pa

tience; that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness; not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things. Titus ii. 2, 3. And he was uncovered, &c.] Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him and maketh him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! Thou art filled with shame for glory, drink thou also; the cup of the Lord's right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory. Hab. ii. 15, 16. I counsel thee to buy of me white raiment that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear. Rev. iii. 18.

22 Ham.] And the sons of Ham, Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. x. 6.

Gen.

Told his brethren, &c.] The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places; how are the mighty fallen! tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 2 Sam. i. 19, 20. For they speak not peace, but they devise deceitful matters against them that are quiet in the land; yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, aha! aha! our eye hath seen it. Ps. xxxv. 20, 21. Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame, that say unto me, aha! aha! Ps. xl. 15. Let them be turned back for a reward of their shame that

say, aha! aha! Ps. lxx. 3. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself, and discover not a secret to another. Prov. xxv. 9. The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. Prov. xxx. 17. But thou (Edom) shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother, in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah, in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress; thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity. Olad. 12, 13. If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Matt. xviii. 15. (Charity) rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth. 1 Cor. xiii. 6. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Gal. vi. 1.

Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew 24 what his younger son had done unto him. And he said, Cursed 25 be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren. And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem; and Canaan shall 26 be his servant. God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in 27 the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. And Noah 28

23 And went backward, &c.] Honour thy father and thy mother. Exod. xx. 12. Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man. Levit. xix. 32. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due, custom to whom custom, fear to whom fear, honour to whom honour. Rom. xiii. 7. See Gal. vi. 1. preced. com. Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him (as a father; let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour; against an elder receive not an accusation but before two or three witnesses. 1 Tim. v. 1. 17. 19. Honour all men, love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the king. 1 Pet. ii. 17. And above all things, have fervent charity among yourselves, for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 1 Pet. iv. 8.

25 Cursed, &c.] See verse 22. And the Lord God said unto the serpent, because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle. Gen. iii. 14. And now art thou (Cain) cursed from the earth (saith God), which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thine hand. Gen. iv. 11. Cursed be their anger (said Jacob of Simeon and Levi), for it was fierce, and their wrath, for it was cruel. Gen. xlix. 7. Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord. Deut. xxvii. 15. Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Deut. xxviii. 18. Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Matt. xxv. 41. Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. John viii. 34.

25 A servant of servants, &c.] Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God; and Joshua made them (the Gibeonites) that day hewers of wood, and drawers of water, for the congregation, even unto this day in the place which he should choose. Josh. ix. 23. 27. And it came to pass when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out; neither did Zebulon drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol, but the Canaanites dwelt among them and became tributaries. Judges i. 28. 30. And all the VOL. I.

people that were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, which were not of the children of Israel, their children that were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel also were not able utterly to destroy; upon those did Solomon levy a tribute of bond service unto this day. 1 Kings ix. 20, 21, 22, and 2 Chron. viii. 7, 8. Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. John viii. 34.

26 Blessed be, &c.] There is none like unto the God of "Jeshurun" ("Israel"), who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky. Deut. xxxiii. 26. Happy is that people that is in such a case, yea, happy is that people whose God is the Lord. Ps. cxliv. 15. Whose (Israel's) are the Father's, and of whom, as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever, amen. Rom. ix. 5.

Now

The Lord God of Shem, &c.] And the beginning of the kingdom was Babel; unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born. Gen. x. 10. 21. the Lord had said unto Abram, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee, and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee and make thy name great, and thou shalt be a blessing. Gen. xii. 1, 2. See Christ's genealogy from Joseph upwards to Adam, Luke iii. 23-38. now they (the fathers of old times) desire a better country, that is, an heavenly, wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city. Heb. xi. 16.

But

27 Dwell in the tents, &c.] And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people to it shall the Gentiles seek, and his rest shall be glorious. Isa. xi. 10. Therefore, behold, I will allure her and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her. Hos. ii. 14. For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same, my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name and a pure offering, for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of Hosts. Mal. i. 11. And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go, as it were, to the sea. Acts F

29 lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

CHAPTER X.

1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, 2 and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and 3 Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras. And the sons of Gomer; Ash4 kenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. And the sons of Javan; 5 Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. By these were the

xvii. 14. Now if the fall of them (Israel) be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles, how much more their fulness. Rom. xi. 12. But now, in Christ Jesus, ye, who sometimes were far off, are made nigh by the blood of Christ, for he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; now therefore, ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and of the household of God. Ephes. ii. 13, 14. 19. By revelation he (the Lord) made known to me the mystery, that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the Gospel; wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. Ephes. iii. 6. 13. By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise; for he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. Heb. xi. 9, 10.

29 Nine hundred, &c.] And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years and he died; and all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died and all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years: and he died and all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died. Gen. v. 5. 20. 27. 31. The days of our years are threescore years and ten, and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow, for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Ps. xc. 10.

CHAP. X.—1 The generations, &c.] These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth, when they were created. Gen. ii. 4. This is the book of the generations of Adam, in the day that God created man. Gen. v. 1. These are the generations of Noah. Gen. vi. 9.

The book of the generation of Jesus Christ. Matt. i. 1.

And unto them, &c.] And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth. And you, be ye fruitful and multiply. Bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. These are the three sons of Noah, and of them was the whole earth overspread. Gen. ix. 1. 7. 19.

2 Sons of Japheth, &c.] See verse 21. And I will set a sign among them, and I will send those that escape of them unto the nations to Tarshish, Pul and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the isles afar off that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory. Isa. lxvi. 19. Fine linen, with broidered work from Egypt, was that which thou (Tyrus) spreadest forth to be thy sail; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah, was that which covered thee. Tarshish was thy merchant. They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs, with horses, with horsemen and mules. Dan also and Javan, going to and fro, occupied in thy fairs. Ezek. xxvii. 7. 12. 14. 19. Son of man, set thy face against Magog, the "chief prince" of Meshech and Tubal Gomer and all his bands. And thou shalt come from thy place out of the north parts, thou and many people with thee. Ezek. xxxviii. 2. 6. 15. Therefore thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God, behold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. Ezek. xxxix. 1. And (Satan) shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle. Rev. xx. 8.

4 Kittim.] And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Ashur, and shall afflict Eber. Numb. xxiv. 24. From the land of Chittim "it" (" the overthrow of Tyre") is revealed to them. And he (the Lord) said, thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shalt thou have no rest. Isa. xxiii. 1. 12. For the ships of Chittim shall come against him (the king of the

isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations. And the sons of 6 Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. And the 7 sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the 8 earth. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it 9 is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.

5 Isles of the Gentiles, &c.] See verse 25. The kings of Tarshish and the isles shall bring presents. Ps. lxxii. 10. Wherefore, glorify ye the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord God of Israel, in the isles of the sea. Isa. xxiv. 15. Behold he (the Almighty) taketh up the isles as a very little thing. Isa. xl. 15. The isles saw it (the exaltation of the righteous, &c.) and feared. Isa. xli. 5. The isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust. Isa. li. 5. To the islands he will repay recompence. Isa. lix. 18. Surely the isles shall wait for me. Isa. Ix. 9. For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see if there be such a thing (as changing their gods). Jer. ii. 10. (Cause all the nations to drink the cup at the Lord's hand), and the kings of the isles which are beyond the seas. Jer. xxv. 22. Men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen. Zeph. ii. 11.

After his tongue, &c.] These are the sons of Ham, after their tongues, &c. Gen. x. 20. And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. Let us go down and there confound their language (said the Lord), that they may not understand one another's speech. Therefore is the name of "it" (" their city") called Babel, because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth. Gen. xi. 1.7.9.

6 The sons of Hum, &c.] And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. Gen. ix. 32. Adam, Sheth, Enosh, the sons of Ham; Cush and Mizraim, Put and Canaan, &c. 1 Chron. i. 1. 8. And they found fat pasture and good, and the land was wide and quiet and peaceable, for they of Ham had dwelt there of old. 1 Chron. iv. 40. And (God) smote all the first born in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham. Ps. lxxviii. 51. Israel also came into Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham. They (Moses and Aaron) shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham. Ps. cv. 23. 27. Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red Sea. Ps. cvi. 22. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time, to recover the remnant of his people which shall be left, from Syria, and from

Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elom, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea. Isa. xi. 11.

Phut.] Come up, ye horses, and rage, ye chariots, and let the mighty men come forth, the Ethiopians, and the Lybians, that handle the shield. Jer. xlvi. 9. They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut were in thine (Tyrus') army, thy men of war. Ezek. xxvii. 10.

7 Seba.] The kings of Sheba and Saba shall offer gifts. Ps. lxxii. 10.

Havilah.] The name of the first (river of Eden) is Pison; that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah. Gen. ii. 11.

Sheba.] And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, concerning the name of the Lord, she came to prove him with hard questions. 1 Kings x. 1. The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they were thy (Tyrus') merchants. Ezek. xxvii. 22.

Dedan.] In the forest in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye travelling companies of Dedanim. Isa. xxi. 13. The men of Dedan were thy (Tyrus') merchants. Ezek. xxvii. 15.

8 Nimrod.] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof. Micah v. 6.

9 Mighty hunter, &c.] There were giants in the earth in those days. Gen. vi. 4. And the boys grew, and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field, and Jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents. Gen. xxv. 27. By thy sword (Esau) thou shalt live, and shalt serve thy brother: and it shall come to pass, when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. Gen. xxvii. 40. And after will I send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the holes of the rocks. Jer. xvi. 16. Will "ye" ("false prophetesses") hunt the souls of my people? Ezek. xiii. 18. There is none upright among men; they all lie in wait for blood, they hunt every man his brother with a net. Micah vii. 2.

Before the Lord, &c.] The earth also was corrupt before God. Gen. vi. 11. The men of Sodom were wicked, and sinners before the Lord exceedingly. Gen. xiii. 13.

Even as Nimrod, &c] And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the Lord: this is that king Ahaz. 2 Chron. xxviii. 22. Lo this is the man that made not
