SELECTION OF HYMNS.

1

HYMN I. (L. M.)

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun,
Thy daily stage of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and early rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Glory to thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refresh'd me while I slept:
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

3 Lord, I my vows to thee renew,

Scatter my sins as morning dew:
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.

4 Direct, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say:

That all my powers, with all their might, In thy sole glory may unite.

5 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise him all creatures here below, Praise him above, ye heav'nly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Psalm xii, 7. (P. M.)

1 THROUGH the night, by thee preserved,
Lord, we come to own thy care,
Had'st thou done, as we deserved,
Death and wrath our portion were.
Saviour! pardon all our sin,

Let this day with thee begin:
Ev'ry hour,

Ev'ry pow'r,

Through the day to thee be given,
Ev'ry day till call'd to heaven!

Haggai ii, 7. (P. M.)

1 COME thou long expected Jesus!
Born to set thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in thee;
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all thy saints thou art;
Dear desire of ev'ry nation,
Joy for ev'ry longing heart!

2 Born thy people to deliver,
Born a child, and yet a King ;
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring;

1

By thine own eternal Spirit,
Rule in all our hearts alone:
By thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

Hebrews x, 4. (S. M.)

NOT all the blood of beasts,
On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Nor wash away the stain.
2 But Christ, the heav'nly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;

A sacrifice of nobler name,
And richer blood than they.

3 My soul looks back to see
The burden thou didst bear,
When hanging on th' accurs'd tree,
And hopes her guilt was there.

4 Believing, we rejoice

5

To see the curse remove :

We bless the Lamb, with cheerful voice, And sing his bleeding love.

Proverbs xviii, 24. (P. M.)

1 ONE there is, above all others,

Well deserves the name of friend: His is love beyond a brother's, Costly, free, and knows no end: They, who once his kindness prove, Find it everlasting love!

2 Which of all our friends, to save us,

Could or would have shed their blood?
But our Jesus died to have us

Reconcil'd in him to God:
This was boundless love indeed!
Jesus is a friend in need!

3 When he liv'd on earth abused,
Friend of sinners was his name;

Now above all glory raised,
He rejoices in the same:
Still he calls them brethren, friends,
And to all their wants attends.

4 Could we bear from one another,
What he daily bears from us?
Yet this glorious friend and brother
Loves us though we treat him thus :
Though for good we render ill,
He accounts us brethren still.

5 Oh! for grace our hearts to soften ;
Teach us, Lord, at length to love;
We, alas, forget too often,

[ocr errors]

What a friend we have above :

But when home our souls are brought,
We will love thee as we ought!

Romans viii, 35. (L. M.)

1 O THOU, by long experience tried,
Near whom no grief can long abide;
My Lord, how full of sweet content,
I pass my years of banishment!

2 All scenes alike engaging prove,
To souls impress'd with sacred love;
Where'er they dwell, they dwell in thee;
In heaven, on earth, or on the sea.

3 To me remains, nor place, nor time,
My country is in ev'ry clime;

I can be calm and free from care
On any shore, since God is there.

4 While place we seek, or place we shun,
The soul finds happiness in none :
But with my God, to guide our way,
'Tis equal joy to go or stay.

5 Could I be cast where thou art not;
That were indeed a dreadful lot;
But regions none remote I call,
Secure of finding God in all.

Ephesians i, 14. (c. M.)

1 WHY should the children of a king
Go mourning all their days?
Great Comforter! descend and bring
Some tokens of thy grace.

2 Dost thou not dwell in all the saints,
And seal the heirs of heaven?

When wilt thou banish my complaints,
And show my sins forgiven?
