Hymn 40.

L. M.

THAT my load of sin were goue!

O that I could at last submit,
At Jesu's feet to lay it down,
To lay my soul at Jesu's feet.

Rest for my soul I long to find:
Saviour of all if mine thou art,
Give me thy meek and lowly mind,
And stamp thine image on my heart.
Break off the yoke of inbred sin,
And fully set my spirit free:
I cannot rest till pure within,
Till I am wholly lost in thee.
Fain would I learn of thee, my God,

Thy light and easy burden prove,
The cross, all stain'd with hallow'd blood,
The labour of thy dying love.

I would but thou must give the pow'r,
My heart from every sin release;
Bring near, bring near the joyful hour,
And fill me with thy perfect peace.
Come, Lord, the drooping sinner cheer,
Nor let thy chariot wheels delay;
Appear, in my poor heart appear:
My God, my Saviour, come away.

Hymn 41. L. M.

EFORE Jehovah's awful throne,

BEFO

Ye nations bow with sacred joy, Know that the Lord is God alone, He can create and can destroy.

His sov'reign pow'r without our aid,
Made us of clay and form'd us men;
And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd,
He brought us to his fold again.

We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs,
High as the heav'ns our voices raise ;
And earth, with her ten thousand tongues,
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.
Wide as the world is thy command,
Vast as eternity thy love;

Firm as a rock thy truth must stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move.

Hymn 42. L. M.

HE spacious firmament on high,
With all the blue etherial sky,

And spangl'd heav'ns, a shining frame,
Their great original proclaim.
Th' unwearied sun from day to day,
Does his Creator's pow'r display,
And publishes to ev'ry land,
The work of an Almighty hand,

Soon as the ev'ning shades prevail,
The moon takes up her wond'rous tale,
And nightly to the list'ning earth
Repeats the story of her birth;

Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in theirturn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.

What though in solemn silence all
Move round this dark terrestrial ball?

G

What though no real voice or sound,
Amid their radiant orbs are found?
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice,
For ever singing as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."

REAT Sov'reign of the human heart,
Thy mighty energy impart,

Which penetrates the heart of steel,
And makes the harden'd conscience feel.
Let sinners tremble at thy word,
Struck with the terror of the Lord;
And, while they tremble, let them flee
For pardon, life and peace to thee.

GOD of wisdom! God of might! Who out of darkness brought forth light, Whose truths are hid from prudent eyes, But make the babes and sucklings wise; Help every darken'd sinner, Lord, To hear and understand thy word. Reveal the scriptures to our mind: Here let us heav'nly treasures find; Those sacred pages now unfold, That we may there thy grace behold; O let thy Spirit teach us still, To comprehend thy blessed will. Direct us, lest we judge amiss, Lest error cloud the hidden bliss:

Thine oracles may we receive,
That to thy glory we may live:
O let us from the heart obey

Those gracious precepts they convey.

Hymn 45. P. M.

EACE, troubl'd breast, whose plaintive moan Hath taught these rocks the notes of woe: Cease thy complaint, suppress thy groan, And let thy tears forget to flow:

Behold the precious balm is found,

Which lulls the pain, which heals the wound.

Come, freely come, by sin opprest,
Unburthen here the weighty load;
Here find thy refuge and thy rest,
Safe in the bosom of thy God.
Thy God's thy Saviour-glorious word!
Which sheathes th' avenger's threat'ning sword.

As spring the winter, day the night,

Peace sorrow's gloom shall chase away, And smiling say, "A seraph bright

Shall lead thy steps; and here then stay, While glory weaves th' immortal crown, And waits to claim thee for her own."

For Christmas Day.

LET peace her olive wand extend,

Let white rob'd innocence descend;

Fly swift ye years, and hail the morn,
O spring to light, bless'd Babe be born!

See nature hastes her wreaths to bring,
With all the incense of the spring;
Hark! a glad voice the desert cheers,
"Prepare the way, a God appears."
"A God! a God!" the groves reply:
The rocks proclaim a Deity;

Lo! earth receives him from the skies,
Bow down ye hills, ye vallies rise.

A Saviour comes, by seers foretold,
Hear him, ye deaf; ye blind behold;
The lame shall leap, the dumb shall sing,
And hail the coming of their King.

No sigh, no groan the world shall hear,
From ev'ry face he wipes the tear ;
Death shall in iron chains be bound,
And hell's grim tyrant feel the wound.

Arise, imperial Salem, rise,

Exalt thine head and lift thine eyes ;
His word is fix'd, his power remains,
Thy realm still lasts, Messiah reigns.

CHORUS.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav'nly host
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

ISE, ye christiaus, rise and sing,
Where, O death! is now thy sting?

Where, O grave! thy victory!"
Christ from both hath set you free.
