27 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

28 Make me to go in the path of thy commandments: for therein do I delight.

29 Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covet

ousness.

30 Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. 31 Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.

LESSON XLVIII.

LET thy mercies come unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word.

2 So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word.

3 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judge

ments.

4 So shall I keep thy law continually, for ever and ever.

5 And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

6 I will speak of thy testimonies also before kings, and will not be ashamed.

7 And I will delight myself in thy commandments which I have loved.

8 My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes.

¶9 Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.

10 This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.

11 The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.

12 I remembered thy judgements of old, O Lord: and have comforted myself.

13 Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

14 I have remembered thy name, O Lord, in the night, and have kept thy law.

15 This I had, because I kept thy precepts.

16 Thou art my portion, O Lord I have said that I would keep thy words.

17 Ientreated thy favour with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.

18 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.

19 I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.

20 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.

21 The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy teach me thy statutes.

22 Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O Lord, according unto thy word.

23 Teach me good judgement and knowledge: for I have believed thy commandments.

24 Before I was afflicted, I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.

25 Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. 26 It is good for me that I

have been afflicted; that I might mandments hast made me wiser

27 Therefore I will look unto the Lord: I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.

28 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

29 I know, O Lord, that thy judgements are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.

30 Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.

31 Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.

32 Let my heart be found in thy statutes; that I be not ashamed.

LESSON XLIX.

My soul fainteth for thy salvation; but I hope in thy word.

2 Mine eyes fail for thy word, saying, When wilt thou comfort me?

3 Unless thy law had been my delight, I should then have perished in mine affliction.

4 I will never forget thy precepts for with them thou hast quickened me.

5 I am thine, save me: for I have sought thy precepts.

6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O Lord, for it is good.

7 O how I love thy law! it is my meditation all the day.

8 Thou through thy com

9 I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.

10 I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

11 I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.

12 I have not departed from thy judgements: for thou hast taught me.

13 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth.

14 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

15 Teach me and I will hold my tongue, and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

16 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgements.

17 I am afflicted very much : quicken me, O Lord, according unto thy word.

¶ 18 Accept, I beseech thee, the free-will-offerings of my mouth, O Lord, and teach me thy judgements.

19 Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage for ever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

20 I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.

21 I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.

¶23 Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

24 Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope.

25 Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.

26 Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for the word of thy righteousness.

27 Deal with thy servant according unto thy mercy, and teach me thy statutes.

28 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

29 I love thy commandments above gold, yea, above fine gold.

: 30 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right: and I hate every false way.

LESSON L.

THY testimonies are wonderful therefore doth my soul keep them.

2 Teach me thy way, O Lord; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

3 I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.

7 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: and teach me thy statutes.

8 Rivers of waters run down mine eyes: because they keep not thy law.

9 Righteous art thou, O Lord and upright are thy judgements.

10 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear

me.

11 But verily God hath heard he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.

16 I cried with my whole heart hear me, O Lord, I will keep thy statutes.

:

17 I cried unto thee, save me: and I shall keep thy testimonies.

18 I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word.

21 Thou art near, O Lord; and all thy commandments are truth.

22 Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for

ever.

23 Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law.

24 Plead my cause, and deliver me quicken me according to thy word.

25 Salvation is far from the wicked for they seek not thy statutes.

26 Great are thy tender mercies, O Lord: quicken me according to thy judgements.

28 Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgements endureth for ever.

29 I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love.

30 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house; he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.

31 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that

they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.

¶ 32 Lord, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.

41 Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgements help me.

42 I have gone astray like a lost sheep: seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments..

SECTION IV.-Truth and Honesty.

LESSON LI.

As a mad man who casteth fire. brands, arrows, and death,

2 So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

3 An hypocrite with his mouth

destroyeth his neighbour: but through knowledge shall the just be delivered.

4 The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit.

5 The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for blood: but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

6 Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

7 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him.

8 When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart,

9 Whose hatred is covered by deceit; his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

:

10 Whoso diggethapit shall fall therein and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.

11 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

12 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

13 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

14 He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness; but a false witness, deceit.

15 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.

16 The lips of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a mòment.

¶17 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

18 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

19 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

20 His tongue deviseth mischiefs: like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

21 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

22 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

23 The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

24 Excellent speech becometh not a fool; much less do lying lips a prince.

25 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil: but to the counsellors of peace is joy.

26 He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous, him shall the people curse; nations shall abhor him.

27 The mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

28 Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.

29 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
