4 The soul, a dreary province once
Of Satan's dark domain,
And owns a heavenly reign.
The fruitful year control,
He started from the goal,
His orient rays impart;
Can shine upon the heart,
361. L.M.-God shining into the Heart. 2 Cor. iv. 6. 1 PRAISE to the Lord of boundless might,
With uncreated glories bright!
presence gilds the worlds above; The' unchanging source of light and love. 2 Our rising earth his eye beheld,
When in substantial darkness veil’d,
Lay buried in eternal gloom.
And light o'er all its face was spread;
Gay with its new-born lustre shone. 4 He sees the mind, when lost it lies
In shades of ignorance and vice;
And changes midnight into day.
On this benighted heart of mine;
6 My soul reviv'd by heaven-born day,
Thy radiant image shall display ;
John xiv. 19.
Shall stand for ever good,
He purchas'd with his blood.
“ And you shall therefore live;
My power and love can give.
Though earthly helpers die;
While Christ our friend is nigh. 4 The king of fears can do no more
Than stop our mortal breath;
P.M.-Christ the Believer's Life.
In Christ, our Redeemer, we see;
For all it is open and free:
To drink of his pleasures unknown;
That flow from his heavenly throne. 2 As soon as in him we believe,
By faith of his Spirit we take:
The mercy for Jesus's sake!
We gain a pure drop of his love;
The life of eternity know;
While men lie grovelling here!
And faith forbids his fear.
While grace and joy combine
Are hidden and divine.
His God in secret sees;
He dwells in heavenly peace.
Beyond this world and time,
Nor thoughts of mortals climb.
To raise his figure here;
To meet that glorious day:
365. C.M.-Christians, as risen with Christ, are to seek things above.
Col. jii. 1.
Ye heirs of glory hear;
2 Baptiz’d into your Saviour's death,
Your souls to sin must die;
With Christ ascend on high.
Enthron'd divinely fair,
On wings of faith and love;
And be your hearts above.
When we attempt to fly;
To raise and fix us high,
366. L.M. - Light shining in Darkness. Ex. x 23. 1 WHILE Egypt lies enwrapt in night,
And horror reigns in every mind, Where Israel dwells, there wondrous light Diffuses
peace and joy refin'd. 2 So grace shall round the righteous shine,
In tents of poverty and wo;
To lay their proud oppressors low.
Where'er his ransom'd sons may rest, The Sun of Righteousness shall rise,
In all his richest glory drest. 4 Through every scene of suffering here,
His light and comfort shall prevail; Nor can our faith admit a fear,
Should all the springs of nature fail.
P.M.- Divine Love. 1 O LOVE Divine, how sweet thou art! When shall I find my willing heart
All taken up by thee?
The love of Christ to me. 2 Stronger his love than death and hell; Its riches are unsearchable:
The first-born sons of light
The length, and breadth, and height. 3 God only knows the love of God: O that it now were shed abroad
In this poor stony heart:
Be mine this better part.
Be this my happy choice:
To hear the Bridegroom's voice. 5 O that, with humbled Peter, I Could weep, believe, and thrice reply,
-My faithfulness to prove;
Thou know'st that thee I love.
The dear Redeemer's breast!
My everlasting rest.
