HOPE AND RESIGNATION.

I

ON thee, O GOD! we still depend,
Our father, and our constant friend
All that is good thou canst supply,
And put all threat'ning evil by.

JI

;

Should ills of ev'ry kind invade,
We'll shelter seek beneath thy shade:
We'll trust to thy paternal care,
Nor want, nor harm, nor danger fear.

III

We'll still refer ourselves to thee,
And with our lot contented be;
With one consenting heart and voice,
Approve our heav'nly father's choice.

IV

From earth we'll turn our longing eyes,
To regions far beyond the skies;
O! fit us for that blest abode,
Our loving father and our GOD!

HOPE OF IMMORTALITY.

I

THOSE happy realms of joy and peace
Fain would my heart explore;
Where grief and pain for ever cease,
And I shall sin no more.

II

No darkness there shall cloud the
No languor seize the frame;

But ever active vigour rise

To feed the vital flame.

III

But ah! a dreary vale between
Extends its awful gloom :

eyes,

Fear spreads the no far distant scene,
The horrors of the tomb.

IV

But thy blest word, and will divine,
Do pierce beyond the grave!
They show that friend, and call him mine,
Whofe arm is strong to save!

V

Here will I fix, for life is here;
Light breaks amid the gloom;
Trust in JEHOVAH's love, nor fear
The horrors of the tomb.

DESIRE OF HOLINESS.

I

O! THAT the LORD would guide my ways, To keep his statutes still!

O! that my GOD would grant me help, To know and do his will!

II

In deepest characters impress
Thy law upon my heart!

Nor let my tongue the truth transgress,
Nor act the sland'rer's part.

III

From vanity turn off mine eyes;
Let no corrupt design,
Nor covetous desire, arise

Within this heart of mine.

IV

Assist my heart, too apt to stray,
A stricter watch to keep;
And, since I've not forgot thy way,
Restore thy wand'ring sheep.

V

Make me to walk in thy commands,
'Tis a delightful road;

Nor let my head, or heart, or hands,
Offend against my GOD.

DESIRE OF KNOWLEDGE.

I

THY mercies fill the earth, O LORD!
How good thy works appear!
Open our eyes to read thy word,
And see thy wonders there.

II

Our hearts were fashion'd by thy hand;
Our service is thy due;
O! make thy servants understand
The duties they must do.

III

Since we are strangers here below,
Let not our path be hid,

But mark the road that we should
And be our constant guide.

IV

If GOD to us his statutes shew,
And heav'nly truth impart,
His work for ever we'll pursue,
His law shall rule our heart.

V

go,

And when we've learnt our father's will,
We'll teach the world his ways:
Our thankful lips, inspir'd with zeal,
Shall loud pronounce his praise.

THE BLESSEDNESS OF THE RIGHTEOUS.

I

BLEST are the undefil'd in heart,
Whose ways are right and clean;
Who never from thy law depart,
But fly from ev'ry sin.

II

Blest are the men who keep thy word,
And practise thy commands:
With their whole heart they seek thee, LORD!
And serve thee with their hands.

III

Great is their peace who love thy law;
How firm do they abide !

Nor can a strong temptation draw
Their steadiness aside.

IV

Then shall our hearts have inward joy,
And we be kept from shame,
When all thy statutes we obey,
And honour thy great name.
