3orne on angel's wings to heaven,
Glad the summons to obey,
May we ever

Reign with Christ in endless day!

HYMN CXXXVIII.

An Evening Song.

C. M.

DREAD Sov'reign! let my ev'ning song
Like holy incense rise;
Assist the off'rings of my tongue
To reach the lofty skies.

Through all the dangers of the day
Thy hand was still my guard;
And still, to drive my wants away,
Thy mercy stood prepar❜d.

Perpetual blessings from above
Encompass me around;

But, O bow few returns of love
Hath my Creator found!

4 What have I done for him that dy'd
To save my wretched soul?

How are my follies multiply'd,
Fast as my minutes roll!

5 Lord, with this guilty heart of mine
To thy dear cross I flee;

And to thy grace my soul resign,
To be renew'd by thee.

6 Sprinkled afresh with pard'ning blood,
I lay me down to rest,
As in th' embraces of my God,
Or on my Saviour's breast.

HYMN CXXXIX.

A Morning Hymn.

(By Bp. Kenn.)

L. M.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun,
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and early rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Redeem thy mispent time that 's past,
Live this day as if 't were thy last;
T'improve thy talent take due care,
'Gainst the great day thyself prepare.
3 Let all thy converse be sincere,
Thy conscience as the noon-day clear;
Think how th' all-seeing God thy ways
And all thy secret thoughts surveys.
4 Glory to God, who safe hath kept,
And hath refresh'd me while I slept:
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

Direct, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my pow'rs, with all their might,
In thy sole glory may unite.

[blocks in formation]

A Song for Morning or Evening.

I. MY God, how endless is thy love!
Thy gifts are ev'ry ev'ning new,

[ocr errors]

And morning mercies from above
Gently distil, like early dew.

2 Thou spread'st the curtains of the night,
Great Guardian of my sleeping hours;
Thy sov'reign word restores the light,
And quickens all my drowsy pow'rs.

3 I yield my pow'rs to thy command;
To thee I consecrate my days:
Perpetual blessings from thine hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

HYMN CXLI. L. M.

A Morning Hymn.

1 GOD of the morning! at whose voice The cheerful sun makes haste to rise;

And like a giant does rejoice

To run his journey through the skies.

2 From the fair chambers of the east The circuit of his race begins; And, without weariness or rest,

Round the whole earth he flies and shines. 3 0 Eke the sun may I fulfil

Ta' appointed duties of the day, With ready mind and active will March on, and keep my heav'nly way. 4 Bat I shall rove, and lose the race, If God, my sun, should disappear, And leave me in this world's wild maze, To follow ev'ry wand'ring star.

5 Lord, thy commands are clean and pure,
Enlight'ning our beclouded eyes;
The threat'nings just, thy promise sure,
Thy gospel makes the simple wise.

6 Give me thy counsel for my guide,
And then receive me to thy bliss:
All my desires and hopes beside
Are faint and cold, compar'd with this.

[blocks in formation]

I GLORY to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light:

Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Under thine own Almighty wings.

Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
Whatever ills this day I've done,
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
With joy behold the judgment-day.

O may my soul on thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eye-lids close,
Sleep that may me more vig'rous make
To serve my God when I awake.

5 May my blest Guardian, while I sleep,
His watchful station near me keep;
Let no vain dreams disturb my rest,
No pow'rs of darkness me molest.

6 Lord, let my soul for ever share
The bliss of thy paternal care :
"T'is heav'n on earth, 'tis heav'n above,
To see thy face, and sing thy love.
