3 They go from strength to strength,
Through this dark vale of tears;
Till each arrives at length,
Till each in heav'n appears:
O glorious seat,

When God our King
Shall thither bring
Our willing feet.

PSALM LXXXIV.

THIRD VERSION.

L. M.

The Pleasures of Public Worship.

1 HOW pleasant, how divinely fair,

O Lord of hosts, thy dwellings are!
With long desire my spirit faints
To meet th' assemblies of thy saints.

2 Bless'd are the souls that find a place
Within the temple of thy grace ;
There they behold thy gentle rays,
And seek thy face, and learn thy praise.

3 Bless'd are the men whose hearts are set To find the way to Sion's gate;

God is their strength; and through the road

They lean upon their Helper, God.

4 Cheerful they walk with growing strength,
Till all shall meet in heav'n at length;
Till all before thy face appear,
And join in nobler worship there.

PSALM LXXXV.

Salvation by Christ.

L. M.

1 SALVATION is for ever nigh,

The souls that fear and trust the Lord;
And grace, descending from on high,
Fresh hopes of glory shall afford.

2 Mercy and truth on earth are met,
Since Christ the Lord came down from
heav'n;

By his obedience, so complete,

Justice is pleas'd, and peace is giv❜n.

3 Now truth and honour shall abound,
Religion dwell on earth again,
And heav'nly influence bless the ground,
In our Redeemer's gentle reign.

4 His righteousness is gone before,
To give us free access to God:
Our wand'ring feet shall stray no more,
But mark his steps, and keep the road.

PSALM LXXXVI.

Prayer and Praise.

C. M.

1 THOU, Lord, art good, nor only good, But prompt to pardon too;

Of plenteous mercy to all those,
Who for thy mercy sue.

2 Teach me thy ways, O Lord, and I
From truth shall ne'er depart ;

In rev'rence to thy sacred name
Devoutly fix my heart.

3 Thee will I praise, O Lord, my God,
Praise thee with heart sincere ;
And to, thy everlasting name
Eternal honours rear.

4 Thy boundless mercy shown to me,
Transcends my pow'r to tell!
"Tis thou, who dost redeem my soul
From lowest depths of hell.

PSALM LXXXVII.

C. M.

The Honour of God's Church.

1 GOD loves the gates of Sion best,
His grace doth there abide;

He loves them more than all the rest
Of Jacob's tents beside.

2 Full glorious things reported be Of Sion all abroad

1;

Great things, I say, are said of thee,
Thou city of our God.

3 In future records it shall stand,
And thence be made appear
Of Sion, that the Chief of all
Had his beginning there.

4 Then with the sacred bands I'll say,
(Who there in plenty be)

"My fountains, and my pleasant springs Are all combin'd in thee."

PSALM LXXXVIII.

Prayer in deep Distress.

C. M.

1 GOD of my health, the hope and stay Thou art alone to me;

I call and cry throughout the day,
And all the night to thee.

2 O let my pray'r with speed ascend
Unto thy sight on high;
Incline thine ear, O Lord, attend,
And hearken to my cry.

The Messiah.

3 Why dost thou, Lord, forsake my soul,
That humbly seeketh thee?
And in my grief why dost thou hide
Thy face away from me?

1 O let my pray'r with speed ascend,
Unto thy sight on high;
Incline thine ear, O Lord, attend,
And hearken to my cry.

PSALM LXXXIX.

FIRST VERSION...

C. M.

The Happiness and Security of God's People. 1 BLESS'D are the men that know aright The joyful sound, O God; For in the favour of thy sight They walk full safe abroad.

2 Yea, in thy name, throughout the day,
They greatly do rejoice;

And through thy righteousness do they
Exult in heart and voice.

3 For why? Their glory, strength, and aid, In thee alone doth lie;

Thy goodness unto us display'd,

Shall lift our horn on high.

4 The strength that doth defend us well, The Lord to us doth bring;
